Most university field trips end at the park gate. Students arrive, spend a day or two observing, and return to campus to write up what they saw. The Nsasani Trust conservation research facility at Skukuza does not work that way. It sits inside the Kruger National Park — not adjacent to it, not near it — and students who come here do not observe the ecosystem from a distance. They work in it.
What Is the Skukuza Science Leadership Initiative?
The Skukuza Science Leadership Initiative — known as the SSLI — is a field campus and research facility located in Skukuza, inside the Kruger National Park. It is a partnership between Nsasani Trust, the Organisation for Tropical Studies (OTS), and South African National Parks (SANParks). The SSLI campus was officially opened in September 2017, following four years of design and construction.
The facility includes a lecture theatre, a library, a fully equipped laboratory, and accommodation for up to 40 students. Its green roof — designed both to regulate temperature and to serve as a space for botanical experiments — reflects the same principle that runs through everything Nsasani does: the building itself is a teaching tool.
However, what makes the SSLI genuinely distinctive is not its infrastructure. It is the location. There is no other accredited science education facility of this kind operating from inside a South African national park. That proximity to active ecosystems is not incidental — it is the point.
Why Location Changes Everything
Field stations exist in many parts of the world, but most operate at the margins of the environments they study. The SSLI is embedded in one of the most ecologically complex and well-studied savannas on earth. Students who attend programmes here wake up inside the system they are studying. The data they collect is not simulated. The questions they ask are not hypothetical.
Consider what that means in practice. A student studying elephant impact on woody vegetation does not read case studies from Zimbabwe or Botswana and extrapolate. She walks a transect through the northern plains of the Kruger National Park, records bark damage on individual knob-thorn acacias, and compares those observations against decades of monitoring data held by SANParks Scientific Services — data collected from the same landscape she is standing in.
In addition, the Kruger National Park is one of the most intensively monitored ecosystems in Africa. Long-term datasets on rainfall, fire history, herbivore populations, and vegetation cover go back decades. Students and researchers at the SSLI have access to that institutional knowledge in ways that are not available anywhere else.
A Facility Built Around What the Sector Actually Needs
The SSLI campus was designed with a specific purpose: to address the gap between South Africa’s biodiversity sector and the human capital it needs to function. SANParks manages nearly four million hectares of protected land. The broader conservation sector — including private reserves, research institutions, and environmental management agencies — requires a steady supply of trained, field-competent practitioners. That supply does not emerge automatically from undergraduate degree programmes.
The facility was therefore built to serve multiple levels of training simultaneously. Undergraduate students attend structured field courses accredited through their home institutions. Honours and masters students undertake research projects with direct relevance to park management. Senior scientists attend topic-specific workshops and collaborate with SANParks researchers on questions that matter to how the park is run.
This layered model means that a first-year student and a PhD candidate can be working in the same landscape on the same day — one learning to identify grass species by their seed heads, the other modelling fire return intervals across soil types. Both are doing real work. Neither is simulating it.
Who Uses the SSLI Facility?
The SSLI serves students and researchers from across South Africa and internationally. Partner institutions include the University of the Western Cape, the University of Mpumalanga, and the University of the Witwatersrand, among others. The facility is also part of the Organisation of Biological Field Stations (OBFS) — a global network that connects field researchers across continents.
International researchers use the campus as a base for long-term ecological studies in the Kruger National Park. Local students — many of them from communities bordering the park — attend programmes specifically designed to remove the financial and logistical barriers that typically exclude them from field-based training.
Since 2013, Nsasani Trust has delivered more than 190 field programmes at the SSLI and contributed to over 45 peer-reviewed scientific publications. Those numbers reflect something straightforward: when you place trained people in a well-studied ecosystem and ask them real questions, useful knowledge accumulates.
