What our visitors say about Nsasani

Riaaz MohammedPhD Student University of the Western Cape
The programmes made available to me through the Nsasani Trust, and the Skukuza Scientific Leadership Initiative (SSLI) have been instrumental in my development as an emerging scientist. Thus far, I’ve attended three programmes at the SSLI camp and each time I gain invaluable tools and knowledge that allow me to grow within the scientific space. I cannot express enough how important the immersive learning opportunities have been for me, being able to consolidate theory with practical in-field experience.

The Nsasani trust has uplifted a lot of learners in Acorn-Oaks high school in the rural area of Acornhoek. The programmes Nsasani runs include self-image development of the learners taking part, the love for education and the bigger picture of a fulfilling life. As a teacher, I also gained a lot of knowledge from the initiative, including the fact that a better world is created through acquiring knowledge and putting it into use. I was also intrigued by the fact that Nsasani is taking a step in educating communities about issues of importance such as, global warming and extinction of species on our planet.

There are a few experiences in life that you know you will remember forever. The Women in Science [Biodiversity and Leadership Training] Course I attended in 2019 is one of them. Over the week, I learned so much about myself in terms of exploring outside my comfort zone and how much the world we live in can teach us. I loved spending my time and learning from the incredible people you meet while with the Nsasani Trust. Not only do I understand the world more from a scientific perspective, but I am also better equipped to work in any environment, with anyone.

The knowledge provided during my participation in the Women in Science Programme has been helpful with unleashing my thinking ability. It gave me the power and privilege to conduct scientific research from scratch. I am amazed at how much knowledge I gained, tasks I completed and what I achieved. The best part of it is that I can share with my classmates how to go further with research and writing proposals and presentations from the experience I gained. I am grateful for the staff support and their ability to develop my curiosity in studying further to PhD. It was one of the best courses I have ever participated in.

The real inspiration comes from the co-ordinators Laurence and Karen, who have an obviously insatiable passion for conservation which shines through every communication with them. I am of the firm belief that in the hands of Laurence and Karen and the OTS/Nsasani team, this project will prove that the Kruger National Park is serious about taking conservation into the 21st century on every level.

The Biomimicry Immersion was life changing, and what better place to learn than to come to Kruger! It was an unforgettable experience because I had the opportunity to apply the knowledge that I had gained. The way in which the week was carefully structured also allowed me to deepen my knowledge through lectures, practical activities and best of all, through the game drives and nature walks. Learning in a natural environment truly gave me a deeper level of understanding and truly paved the way for future learning.
